- What should I compare these providers on?
- Starting price normalised to 1,000 requests, whether data is fetched live or served from a stored snapshot, response time, and the published rate limit. Credit-based pricing hides real cost: a provider charging 50 credits per lookup on a plan advertising 200,000 credits is selling you 4,000 lookups.
- Are live APIs or dataset providers better?
- They solve different problems. A dataset provider is the right answer for corpus-wide filtering, analysis, or building an internal database. A live API is the right answer when you have a specific record and need its current state. Many teams run both.
- Why did Proxycurl shut down, and does it matter?
- Proxycurl went offline on 4 July 2025 after litigation brought by the platform it sourced from. It matters because the asset at the centre of that case was a large store of pre-collected records, which is exactly what dataset providers hold. Live-fetch providers carry a different risk profile.
